Universal Joint

Universal coupling (also known as a universal joint or Cardan shaft) is a mechanical transmission component used to connect two shafts whose axes are not collinear. Its core function is to continuously transmit torque and motion in the presence of an angular misalignment between the shafts. The most prominent feature of a universal coupling is its large angular compensation capability, compact structure, and high transmission efficiency. Different structural types of universal couplings allow varying angles between the two shafts, typically ranging from 5° to 45°.
